Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is used in the treatment of thread veins in the legs. These veins (also referred to as spider veins and varicose veins) are made up of tiny blue or red blood vessels that are visible when close to the surface of the skin.
The sclerotherapy treatment is a non-surgical procedure that involves injecting the solution into the vein using a fine needle. This in turn leads to the vein collapsing which results in it fading from the skin’s surface. Sclerotherapy helps reduce the appearance of thread veins but can also help ease any discomfort and throbbing which can come from them as well.
The amount of treatments required can vary based on the patient and the severity of the condition to be treated. Sclerotherapy has a much better success rate when tackling veins in their early stages, thus more prominent and aged veins will require a longer period of treatment.
The side effects for Sclerotherapy are minor, if at all, and can include skin discolouration or small inflamed areas once treated. These will gradually fade and subside over time following the treatment. Patients are required to wear a support stocking or some similar pressure garment after treatment, and this will normally be necessary for a week or so; choosing to not wear one could hamper the effectiveness of the treatment. To help recovery it is encouraged that a patient walks as usual to increase circulation and to speed up the process of the collapsed vein being absorbed into the bloodstream; heavy exercise and activity should be avoided whilst the support is worn.
