Port Wine Stains

Port wine stain is a common name for naevus flammeus, which is a vascular birthmark that gains its name from its reddish purple colour; the most recognised person with a port wine stain is ex-soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev.

Port wine stains are caused by swollen blood vessels located close to the surface of the skin. They are present at birth where they are more pinkish in hue but over time they will normally darken to a reddish-purple colour. These birthmarks are harmless in most people, and cause no actual discomfort, though if located near the eyes they can cause problems such as glaucoma or epilepsy, however this is rare and affect around 1 in 10 people. Of course the aesthetic appearance of a port wine stain, especially on the face can be very distressing and many wish to have them removed.

Treatment for port wine stains is achieved by laser surgery which collapses the blood vessel and clears the affected area; for full information on treatment for port wine stains contact us.
